WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the following statement in advance of Independence Day 2024.
“On the Fourth of July, we come together as Americans to celebrate our country’s independence from a tyrannical British monarch. American-style democracy has proven its resilience and strength throughout these 248 years, despite many challenges.
“Our country was born out of the notion that ‘all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ These truths still hold strong despite recent actions by the Supreme Court and others that seem wholly contrary to ideals of July 4, 1776.
“May we all use this day to celebrate our nation and cherish the family, friends and communities that we hold dear. In addition to the fireworks and BBQs, let us redouble our efforts to preserve our democracy and the rule of law, and protect civil rights, equality and opportunity for everyone.
“Happy Independence Day!”
