WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (both D-Md.), a member of the Appropriations Committee, announced $3,803,069 in direct federal funding for local projects in Anne Arundel County and Southern Maryland in the fiscal year 2024 funding package passed by the Senate on March 23. These funds, included at the Senators’ request, support projects that address local and regional priorities including climate resilience, workforce training and support services for seniors. The Senators successfully advocated for over $40 million in federal dollars directly for Maryland within the legislation, in addition to the over $160 million they secured in the initial funding package passed March 8. In total, the Senators secured over $200 million for local projects across the state for FY24. President Biden signed the second package into law on March 23, averting a partial government shutdown.

Project Description: City Dock is an economic and cultural center of Annapolis, with proximity to shopping, tourism, dining, and public events. Funds will be used to expand flood protection by constructing a mix of fixed and deployable barriers along Compromise Street to address flooding that occurs during major storms.
Project Name: Community-Based Services for Older Adults to Age in Place with Dignity & Respect
Applicant: Partners In Care Maryland, Inc.
Project Location: Anne Arundel County
Amount Awarded: $1,000,000
Description: Partners In Care provides no-fee transportation, home maintenance, and support to help older adults safely age in place. Funds will be used to expand outreach, training, and programs to serve more individuals.
Project Name: Creating a Restoration Resource Workforce through Reentry Partnerships
Applicant: Maryland Reentry Resource Center Inc.
Project Location: Anne Arundel County
Amount Awarded: $200,000
Description: Funds will be used for a partnership with the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council to provide soft skills, green infrastructure, and landscape training to returning citizens in order to help these individuals secure jobs and create a ready workforce of restoration maintenance professionals.
Project Name: Crownsville Hospital Historic Documentation and Storytelling

Project Description: The Crownsville Hospital has painful history dating back to 1911, which includes physical and mental experimentation on its patients. Funds will help preserve records and artifacts and collect oral histories to establish Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park as a museum of reconciliation and healing.
Project Name: Jonas and Anne Catharine Green Park Coastal Restoration Project

Project Description: Funds will be used to restore and protect the coastline of the public park to be more resilient to climate change and ensure continued access to the water. The project will include improved stormwater management and water quality and enhanced public access and recreation for residents and visitors.

Project Location: Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s and Prince George’s
Amount Awarded:$270,000
Project Description: Funds will support Project Excel in providing training and individualized consultations to developing minority-owned small and micro businesses, helping them grow, mitigate risk, and achieve long-term success.
