U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, D-MD, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will chair an oversight hearing on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and its performance in enforcing anti-discrimination statutes enacted by Congress, including laws relating to voting rights, civil rights, housing, and employment.

As part of the committee’s ongoing investigation of the firing of U.S. Attorneys for improper reasons, the hearing also will examine to what extent political appointees overrule the recommendations and advice of career prosecutors and staff at the Civil Rights Division when it comes to enforcing the law and the hiring, promotion, and firing of staff.

The key witnesses will include Wan Kim, Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Department of Justice, Wade Henderson, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, and Helen Norton, Visiting Assistant Professor University of Maryland School of Law, Baltimore, MD
