"Madeleine Albright was an incredible leader and a presence I will not forget."

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chair of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe released the following statement on the passing of former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright.

“The United States and the free world lost a giant today.

“Throughout her life, Madeleine Albright was a champion for democratic values and institutions, blazing a trail across the globe. She was a diplomat extraordinaire, best-selling author, long-time leader of the National Democratic Institute, trailblazing Ambassador to the United Nations and glass-ceiling breaking Secretary of State, as well as a teacher, mentor, advisor and friend to so many. She was also the mother of three remarkably successful daughters.

“Her childhood as a refugee and daughter of a diplomat and professor prepared her for the challenges and life experiences that would lie ahead. Her contributions to strengthening American diplomacy and standing up for democracy cannot be overstated.

“Madeleine Albright was an incredible leader and a presence I will not forget.

“I send my heartfelt condolences to her family and all who were touched by her life.”
