U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement today:

“I was pleased to see the Army’s December 9, 2008 statement indicating its intent to comply with EPA’s enforcement order at Fort Meade.  That was an important step in the right direction.  But with so much time passed since the enforcement order was first issued over 15 months ago, words alone are not enough.  The Army has still not complied with the order, committed to an enforceable schedule to come into compliance with the order, or signed an alternative enforceable clean-up agreement. I support the state’s decision to hold the Army responsible by filing an enforcement suit in court and will do what I can in Congress to keep the pressure on the Army to meet its clean up obligations at Fort Meade.”
