WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin

Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD)
today announced that Cheverly, Cumberland, Elkton and Fruitland police departments will receive grants from the Department of Justice COPS Hiring Program (CHP) to hire new police officers.

The COPS Hiring Grant Program provides important funding to help our communities hire the law enforcement officers they need to effectively fight and prevent crime,”
Senator Cardin said.  “Good law enforcement depends on having enough police officers on the streets and out in communities and these CHP grants will help keep Marylanders safe.”

Senator Mikulski said. “This grant funding will put more cops on the streets to fight the crime that destroys neighborhoods and ruins dreams.”

CHP grants go directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers. CHP also provides 100 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and benefits for three years for newly hired, full-time sworn officer positions and for rehired officers who have been laid off as a result of local budget cuts.

Cheverly and Fruitland will receive grants to hire one new officer each. Elkton will get funding to hire two and Cumberland Police Department three. Maryland will receive a total of $1,647,875 in grant funding.
