Cardin Celebrates Juneteenth 2024

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Special Representative on Antisemitism, Racism and Intolerance for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, released the following statement in advance of Juneteenth 2024. Senator Cardin is a cosponsor of a Senate resolution recognizing Juneteenth.

“On June 19, we commemorate the 159th Juneteenth. As we recognize the liberation of the last remaining enslaved Black Americans at the end of the Civil War, we also celebrate the fundamental right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.

“This has been a cherished holiday, celebrated as Freedom Day, for many African American communities as far back as 1886. It wasn’t until June 2021 that Congress voted to make Juneteenth a federal holiday so we can all come together to mark an important day in American history.

“Juneteenth festivities across Maryland and across the country highlight community, family, fellowship and unity. These are all values and traditions rooted in Black culture and are pillars of American progress.

“In the words of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, ‘The process of democracy is one of change.’ We are the agents of change and should lead that change by remembering and embracing these long-standing ideals.

“This holiday also calls attention to the important strides we have made as a country and as a state to form a more perfect union. Here in Maryland, Governor Wes Moore, Attorney General Anthony Brown, Speaker Adrienne Jones and others are making history and are opening the doors for future generations.

“We have come so far as a country, but still have more work to do. As we join the country in recognizing the importance of this anniversary and participate in a tradition of celebrating freedom, let us also continue to work toward a better future for every American.”

“Happy Freedom Day!”
