WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement after the full Senate, once again, approved a Senate Joint Resolution that would end unauthorized U.S. military support for the Saudi- and UAE-led intervention in Yemen.

“U.S. support for what has become an immense humanitarian crisis in Yemen finally must come to an end. America’s strength is in our values and we must act when those values are being compromised. Continuing to support the military campaign that has brought such suffering to the people of Yemen runs counter to our national interests, our partners and the cause of regional stability. Congress must act to ensure that arms transfers are not used to commit or facilitate violations of international humanitarian law in conflict zones and are provided only to countries that are demonstrably improving their efforts to protect the human rights and freedoms of their citizens and to promote participation and accountability in governance. Strategic allies like Saudi Arabia should understand that America, at least the Congress, will not let abuses of power go unchecked. It is unconscionable in this era that the President of the United States would prioritize arms sales and economic engagement over human rights, preventing mass atrocities, ending regional destabilization, or seeking justice for extrajudicial killings.”
