Cardin Statement on Independence Day 2019

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) issued the following statement commemorating Independence Day 2019.

“On Thursday, July 4, 2019, we will mark the 243rd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This day allows us all to join together as a community to proudly celebrate our shared history and values. To create a ‘more perfect union’ as our founders endeavored, we must remember that this is a day about no one person. Rather, it is a day about our nation coming together as a whole to celebrate the patriotic values upon which this great nation is built.

“These values include liberty, equality and the rule of law. Strong faith in such values is what has allowed our country to become a world leader in fighting for the human rights of all people across the globe. We must remember that the fight against sexism, racism, homophobia and bigotry in all forms is a fight that is still ongoing in this country.

“America is at its best when we truly live up to the principle inscribed in the Declaration of Independence that ‘all men are created equal.’ Our greatest strengths as a nation have been – and always will be – found in our values, our diversity, and our unity. The Fourth of July is about more than just fireworks and barbeques, it is a recognition of the great virtues of this country we all love.

“To my fellow Marylanders and all Americans: Happy Fourth of July. Happy birthday, America!”
