WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, and Kweisi Mfume (all D-Md.) announced $6,898,433 in federal funding to reimburse Baltimore City for the distribution of food and water to vulnerable city residents during the pandemic.

“As food insecurity spiked during the pandemic, the City of Baltimore and its frontline workers stepped up to meet the needs of underserved residents and support those with a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. This federal funding will reimburse Baltimore for these efforts and ensure the City can continue to help communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the virus,” the lawmakers said. “We will keep working to provide critical nutrition assistance to keep residents safe and healthy as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.” 

The award of $6,898,433 covers:

• $4,591,915 in federal funding to the city of Baltimore for emergency protective measures and the Produce Box 2021 program
• $2,306,518 in federal funding to the city of Baltimore for State Management Cost

Funding is awarded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and is authorized under Section 403 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.

The Baltimore Congressional Delegation previously announced more than $15.4 million in emergency funding to feed and shelter Baltimore residents and announced over $18 million to deliver essential goods, services and resources to seniors across the city during this pandemic.
