Cardin, Bates Discuss Coordinated Public Safety Effort in Baltimore City

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) Thursday met with Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Ivan Bates to discuss how the State’s Attorney’s Office, Mayor’s Office and federal partners can work closer together to support public safety efforts in Baltimore following the City’s historic reduction in the homicide rate.

“Baltimore is truly undergoing a renaissance, and it takes a coordinated effort to accelerate the City’s upward trajectory. We have already seen dramatic improvements in Baltimore’s public safety as a result of the state’s attorney, mayor and other local, state and federal partners working together and investing in community resources,” said Senator Cardin. “This is Team Maryland at its best, and we’re united in the work to keep Baltimore moving in the right direction.”

“It was an honor sitting down with Senator Cardin, discussing the various public safety strategies we can take when addressing crime here in Baltimore. His insight and historical context on the issue was eye-opening and extremely insightful as my office continues to partner with our federal counterparts to continue making Baltimore safe,” said State’s Attorney Bates. “We are fortunate to have had his service and representation over the past half century – both as a leader in Annapolis as well as in Congress – and I am honored to be in a position to learn from his wisdom and lived experience.”
