OCEAN CITY (AP) — The nesting habitat of two endangered birds is being restored with material dredged from a West Ocean City marina.

Sen. Ben Cardin visited Skimmer Island on Monday to view the restoration efforts. The island is used for nesting by black skimmers and royal terns, which are both on the state’s endangered species list. The 2 1/2-acre island near the Route 50 bridge had shrunk to about a third of its former size before sand dredged from the bay bottom near the entrance of a West Ocean City marina was placed on the island this spring.

Cardin says he helped coordinate efforts by the Army Corps of Engineers, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the effort shows how government action can restore wildlife habitat.
