WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators
Barbara A. Mikulski and
Benjamin L. Cardin (both D-Md.) today announced the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $109,795 to the Washington County Commissioners for the Washington County Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS). The project will create a GIS that can compile and disseminate geographical mapping information across multiple forums, greatly improving access to GIS data in the public domain. County employees will be able to view and search the data on the GIS.

“This is a federal investment in Western Maryland communities today and tomorrow. This funding will help the Washington County government develop the tools they need to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible,” said Senator Mikulski. “I will continue to fight to keep Washington County a priority in the federal checkbook.”  

 

“These funds will be used to electronically link 29 Washington County operations into the same digital mapping program,” said Senator Cardin.  “Electronic mapping will result in better, faster and more efficient delivery of County government services ranging from highways to law enforcement to environmental improvements.” 

 

Geographic information systems have historically been confined to planning and engineering departments. This award, however, will institute a county-wide system that covers 29 departments, and will establish an Enterprise GIS position within Washington County’s Information Technologies Department. 

 

In addition to ARC funds, the Washington County Commission will provide another $319,829 for the project, bringing the total funding for the development project to $429,624. The ARC is a federal-state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
