Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and
Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced $9.3 million in new funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program for improvements to the Town of Boonsboro’s two wastewater treatment plants.

The funding will help bring Boonsboro’s two wastewater systems into compliance with regulations established by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). One wastewater system is owned and operated by Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home, a non-profit organization providing nursing home care to approximately 360 residents and its employees. The second facility is operated by the Town of Boonsboro. The upgrades are needed to reduce harmful nutrients from entering Antietam Creek, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

“This Rural Development grant will enable Boonsboro to significantly upgrade its wastewater treatment plants and it will help improve overall water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” said Senator Cardin.
  “This grant is important because it provides the resources that are needed for Boonsboro to be a good steward of the environment.”

“Maryland cities and towns need to do the right thing by the environment by upgrading their water and sewer infrastructure – but they can't do it on their own.
  This funding will help Boonsboro continue to grow in an environmentally responsible way,” said Senator Mikulski. “I will continue to fight to put funds in the federal checkbook to create jobs, build communities and take care of our environment.”
