WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) announced today that the Senate-passed appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) includes two of his top requests that would help save lives of soldiers suffering from severe blood loss and that would fund a new, innovative therapy to help patients who are paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries.

By a vote of 93-7, the Senate passed the DoD appropriations bill with Senator Cardin’s request of $3 million for STB Lifesaving Technologies in Rockville for development of the Fibrin Adhesive Stat (FAST) Dressing.
  This newly developed bandage is designed to be effective against all kinds of blood loss, including severe arterial and venous bleeding. The funding will make it possible for additional clinical trials and final Federal Drug Administration (FDA) testing and documentation.

The Senate also approved Senator Cardin’s request of $2 million for the Kennedy-Krieger Institute’s advanced restoration therapies in spinal cord injury.
  The funding will enable the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Baltimore-based Kennedy-Krieger Institute to continue to develop an innovative therapy technique that stimulates normal movements, a practice that can help regenerate cells and help patients’ bodies “remember” how to move.
 

“Maryland is home to some of the most advanced scientific, medical developments that can help save lives and restore function to others,” said Senator Cardin.
  “I am extremely pleased that we have procured funding for two projects that I believe will save the lives of soldiers on the battlefield and that will help restore movement for those who are paralyzed because of spinal cord injuries.”
