U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Water Subcommittee, visited the City of Rockville’s water treatment plant Friday, which is using $1.745 million in grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to make energy efficient upgrades to its facility. Senator Cardin was joined by Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio, City Manager Scott Ullery, members of the Rockville City Council and other local officials.

The Rockville Water Treatment Plant provides drinking water for 46,000 residents and businesses in the City of Rockville. Federal investment through the ARRA grants has expedited energy efficient upgrades that will save the City tens of thousands of dollars in energy costs annually. It is one of 55,000 projects nationwide that have been funded since the ARRA was signed into law one year ago. Maryland has received $121.6 million for water quality projects across the state.

“Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help jumpstart our economy by creating jobs today and investing in infrastructure that will support and sustain jobs in the future. The City of Rockville is making exactly the right type investments in water infrastructure that will pay dividends in economic growth for its residents and our entire state for years to come,” said Senator Cardin.
