NEW WINDSOR, MD —
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today visited IMA World Health headquarters in New Windsor to thank them for all they have done to help the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake of January 12.
Senator Cardin, a member of the U.S. Foreign Relations Committee, has co-sponsored legislation that would provide long-term, sustainable rebuilding and development in Haiti.
“IMA World Health has committed itself to helping the people of Haiti survive this catastrophe and rebuild their country,” said
Senator Cardin. “IMA has become a world leader in providing health care and supplies to vulnerable populations and to ensuring that poor, Third World nations have the resources that are needed to improve health outcomes for their people.”
On January 12, IMA CEO Rick Santos and four other employees were in the lobby of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince Haiti when the 7-point magnitude earthquake struck, trapping them for more than 50 hours.
Since the earthquake, IMA staff
have returned to Haiti to continue with their work, distributing medications for tropical diseases to approximately 4 million Haitians.
The Haitian government has estimated that 230,000 people died, 300,000 people were injured and 1 million were left homeless in the January earthquake.
It is estimated that Haiti will need $11.5 billion for reconstruction and rebuilding efforts.
At a March donors’ conference, donors pledged nearly $10 billion toward long-term reconstruction efforts.
