WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) joined his Senate colleagues today in unanimously supporting a Senate resolution to honor the military and intelligence communities for, as the Senator said on the Senate floor, “ridding the world of an evil man – Osama bin Laden – and helping to heal the wounds our nation sustained on 9/11.”

The resolution “commends the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and the U.S. intelligence community for committing themselves to defeating, disrupting and dismantling al Qaeda.”

It also “commends the President for ordering the successful operations to locate and eliminate Osama bin Laden” and declares that “the death of Osama bin Laden represents a measure of justice and relief for the families and friends of nearly 3,000 men and women who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001.”

During his floor speech before the Senate vote, Senator Cardin said:  “Osama Bin Laden was a murderer who devoted his life to the destruction of freedom, democracy and our way of life. His death is an important milestone in the fight against global extremist violence and a relief to the millions of Americans and others around the world who have felt his murderous destruction.”

Senator Cardin added: “This successful interagency operation illustrates intelligence-sharing at its best and the commitment of the men and women of our armed forces, as well as our political leadership. And truly, bin Laden was brought to justice – a goal that many had thought would never be achieved – as a result of President Obama’s deliberative planning, coordination and communication, leadership, partnership and dogged persistence.”
