WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced that Maryland will receive $6,466,757 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP).  These federal dollars will be used to improve disaster preparedness of hospitals and health care systems across the state.

“Marylanders will gain peace of mind with this new federal funding that will help ensure that our hospitals and health care systems have the tools they need to help families and communities who’ve been impacted by major crises,” said Senator Cardin. “From fires to natural disasters to possible terrorist threats, our health care professionals are critical members of the front line responders for such devastating events.  Federal investment is essential for ensuring that our hospitals can respond quickly, efficiently and effectively to public health crises.”

“This is a great investment for Maryland,” Senator Mikulski said.  “This grant will allow our hospitals and first responders to save lives and serve our communities to the best of their abilities during an emergency.  With its premier medical institutions, Maryland plays a critical role in providing a strong, coordinated response to large-scale medical emergencies in the National Capital Region.  I will continue to fight for federal investments to keep Marylanders and the homeland safe.” 

HHS awarded more than $352 million nationwide in HPP grants.  Recipients use these federal dollars to employ experts in the field of developing and maintaining emergency preparedness plans, purchase equipment and pharmaceutical supplies, and train staff.  Recipients in Joplin, Missouri used funds to purchase a mobile medical unit after their hospital was destroyed in a devastating tornado.
