Frederick, MD — U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (Both D-MD) today announced that the City of Frederick has received a $910,828 Federal Aviation Administration grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) to support plans to extend the airport’s primary runway.
“Frederick Municipal Airport is a hub for economic development and job creation across the region and I am proud that we can continue to deliver federal grants like this one that will support the City of Frederick’s efforts to enhance their operations,” said Senator Cardin. “Extending the runway and the related development of an airport business park along Bailes Lane will greatly improve safety and provide space for future aviation-related development in Frederick.”
“Our regional airports play a key role in maintaining Maryland’s robust economy,” said Senator Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which funds DoT. “These funds in the federal checkbook for runway expansion will help Frederick Municipal Airport operate safely and efficiently while keeping Marylanders on the go.”
“This FAA reimbursement is crucial as the city moves forward with long-planned improvements at the municipal airport to increase business use, jobs, and revenue,” stated Mayor Randy McClement. “The City has forward-funded $14.4 million for acquisition of properties associated with the approved master plan to lengthen the runway and add corporate hangars.” The city anticipates additional FAA reimbursements in the future.
The grant will support the acquisition of property necessary to extend runway 5/23 from 5,220 ft to 6,000 ft, allowing for larger corporate aircraft to operate at Frederick Municipal Airport.
