WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), today congratulated the Baltimore-headquartered National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on the anniversary of their founding.
“I am so proud to have an organization as venerable as the NAACP call Baltimore home. Today, in 1909 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People began its crusade for civil rights. One hundred and five years later, the NAACP continues to build on a rich and noble tradition of protecting and advancing the civil rights of all Americans. Through strength of character and thoughtful strategy the NAACP has helped enact some of the most important legal and social reforms in the last century. Its work to make us ‘a more perfect union’ is far from complete. From voting rights to fair and equal access to all our great nation offers her citizens, the NAACP remains on watch. I have been privileged to work with the NAACP on such important issues as bringing an end to racial profiling, prohibiting voter intimidation, and advancing a diverse judiciary. On behalf of all those who value equality and dignity for all Americans, I thank the NAACP for their work and their struggles past, present and future.”
