BALTIMORE – In the lead up to Mother’s Day, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Finance Health Care Subcommittee, met with health professionals at Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore to talk about the benefits women and their families have gained from the Affordable Care Act. The roundtable also covered the expanding role federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) have in health care delivery. Chase Brexton, a federally qualified health center, recently added a state-of-the-art OB/GYN unit to better serve the women of Metropolitan Baltimore.
“Before passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), insurers treated being female as a preexisting condition. Inadequate access to affordable health care was a barrier to success and to living a healthy life for too many women. Today, the ACA is helping 47 million women – mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and grandmothers – access the health care services that they need,” said Senator Cardin. “Maryland women rely on FQHCs like Chase Brexton for important preventive services, such as immunizations, health education, mammograms, pap smears and other screenings. Since the Affordable Care Act became law more than three years ago, these health care centers have increasingly improved health outcomes for patients and helped reduce the cost of treating patients with chronic illness.”
“Chase Brexton and the state’s other Federally Qualified Health Centers play a critical role providing primary and preventive health care for people in our communities – regardless of their ability to pay,” said Richard Larison, Chase Brexton’s CEO. “The Affordable Care Act has given us more tools to fulfill our mission to provide compassionate, high-quality health care by giving more Marylanders access to comprehensive insurance coverage. Every day, we can see how health care reform is improving lives and making this a healthier region.”
