WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md) today announced that Washington County has been awarded a $1,000,000 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin the process of rehabilitating and improving taxiways at the Hagerstown Regional Airport.

“This federal grant ensures that the Hagerstown Regional Airport can continue to serve travelers from Washington County and the surrounding area as a safely, reliably and efficiently as possible,” said Senator Cardin. “Regional airports are critically important to Maryland’s economy. Federal investments like this keep travelers moving and businesses growing across our state.”

“I’m so glad to put these funds in the federal checkbook for rehabilitating taxiways at Hagerstown Regional Airport,” said Senator Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which funds DOT. “This project will create construction jobs today and prepare Hagerstown for the jobs of tomorrow.”

The grant will be used to fund the planning and design of major rehabilitation efforts on two taxiways at Hagerstown Regional. Part of the planning process includes ensuring the structural integrity of the taxiway stays intact and the addition of LED safety lighting.

The Hagerstown Regional Airport is one of the oldest continually operated airports in the country operating without interruption since 1928. The airport is open for public use and is managed by Washington County.
