WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced that the City of Baltimore Department of Transportation has received an $854,130 grant from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to fund the Charm City Circulator Harbor Connector water taxi service. This grant will allow for the continued operation of the state-of-the-art, all-electric water taxi and high-powered smart charging infrastructure.

“Prioritizing public transit is good for Baltimore. It keeps our city moving safely and efficiently, fueling economic growth and reducing pollution. This grant for the Charm City Circulator represents a smart federal investment in continuing this Chesapeake Bay friendly transit for Baltimoreans and our visitors,” said Senator Cardin.

“This federal funding is a smart investment that helps keep Baltimore residents and tourists on the move,” said Senator Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee which funds DOT. “It means safer and faster commutes to work, better air quality for a healthier citizenry, and less dependence on foreign oil. I will continue to fight to make sure that Maryland’s transportation needs are a priority in the federal checkbook.”

The City of Baltimore Department of Transportation was awarded this grant on a competitive basis through the FY 2013 & 2014 Discretionary Passenger Ferry Grant Program. Funds will support improvements to the condition of public ferry systems by providing financial assistance for capital projects. The Harbor Connector is a free service for residents, commuters and visitors to Baltimore. The service connects Harbor View with Harbor East and is one of five free circulating commuter routes in Baltimore City.
