Cardin Offers Condolences to the People of Vanuatu

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations East Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee, issued the following statement regarding the destruction caused by Cyclone Pam to the archipelago nation of Vanuatu:

“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of Vanuatu over the tragic loss of life and terrible destruction caused by Cyclone Pam over the weekend. Many nations in the Pacific remain particularly exposed as more and more extreme weather events occur around the globe due to climate change. Sadly, Vanuatu’s recent efforts to improve the living standards of its people and grow its economy have been undone in a few short hours. The United States is already working with our global and regional partners to assist in emergency relief operations, but Vanuatu will require major international assistance in the coming weeks and months.  I know I speak on behalf of the people of Maryland when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Vanuatu during this very difficult time.”
