Cardin Statement on King v. Burwell Decision by the Supreme Court of the United States

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in King v. Burwell:

“The millions of Americans who finally can afford their health coverage because they are receiving federal help with their premiums can exhale at last. The Supreme Court has recognized rightly that Republican attempts to obstruct the Affordable Care Act by failing to set up state-run exchanges did not change the congressional intent that every eligible American should receive the subsidy.

“Because of the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer discriminate against sick people, women can’t be charged more for their health care, and young adults getting their start in the world can stay on their parents’ health plans.  Health care costs are being reigned in, and millions of Americans finally have gained security and stability through affordable health coverage. More than 80 percent of Americans who purchased their health care coverage through one of the health exchanges is satisfied with their health insurance. The Affordable Care Act is now woven into American’s health care system, continuously helping to make it better. It is not going away and I will keep fighting any further attempts to chip away at the substantial good that it is doing for our country.”
