WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (both D-Md.) have announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency, under the Department of Homeland Security, has awarded a $180,953 grant to the Barton Hose Company in Barton, Allegany County. The grant will be used to purchase a new vehicle designed for fighting brush, grass and forest fires. The vehicle’s unique setup will allow firefighters to drive and pump water simultaneously. The Department is responsible for covering a large portion of the Savage River Forest.
“Barton’s first responders deserve every resource they need to safely go about the difficult and dangerous business of saving lives. This federal investment delivers exactly that, helping to ensure more of our firefighters return home safely,” said Senator Cardin. “I’m committed to bringing these critical investments to first responders across our whole state.”
“Nothing is more important than the safety and security of our communities, and our first responders must have the right tools to protect our families,” said Senator Van Hollen. “This grant will help Barton’s firefighters effectively tackle blazes before they threaten life or property.”
Federal funds are awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, which awards grants directly to fire departments, nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Services organizations, and state fire training academies to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Van Hollen worked to secure $345 million for the AFG program in the recent budget agreement for Fiscal Year 2017.
