Week of August 3rd
CHESAPEAKE BAY HEARING: The Chesapeake Bay and its watershed are in trouble. The Bay continues to have poor water quality, degraded habitats and low populations of many species of fish and shellfish. As chairman of the Environment and Public Works Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, on Monday I will hold the second in a series of hearings to discuss with state and local officials from the Bay's watershed about ways we can work together to improve inter-state cooperation in protecting and restoring the Chesapeake Bay. Pollution does not stop at state lines and neither should our revitalization efforts. We must all work together if we want to see further progress toward a healthy, sustainable Chesapeake Bay.
SOTOMAYOR NOMINATION: This week the full Senate will debate and vote on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be an Associate Justice to the Supreme Court. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and after questioning her during the confirmation hearings, I am confident that Judge Sotomayor is committed to upholding precedent in protecting civil rights and civil liberties of all Americans. In reviewing her record and past decisions, I also believe that Judge Sotomayor has the temperament and experience and understanding of the Constitution to become a valuable member of the Court. I look forward to joining many of my Senate colleagues in voting to confirm Judge Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.
CLIMATE CHANGE: I will speak on the Senate floor this week to voice my support for strong climate change legislation. The American Clean Energy and Security Act will create millions of new clean energy jobs, save consumers hundreds of billions of dollars in energy costs, enhance America's energy independence, and cut global warming pollution. Dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to the environmental health of our planet. American businesses will see an unprecedented federal investment in retooling for tomorrow. This bill will put us on a path to energy independence, which is important to our national security.
UPCOMING MEDIA: On Thursday (8/6) at 6 pm., I will be live on MSNBC's The Ed Show, talking with host Ed Schultz about health care reform. For those of you who live in the Washington area, I will be live on WAMU's The Kojo Nnamdi Show (88.5FM) at noon on Friday (8/7).
